publishes booklets on how to reduce costs in filing of patents
and trademarks, C&R also has articles published monthly in The
Attorney of Nassau on current topics of interest in patents,
trademarks and copyrights.
At the inception of a new inventive idea or trademark, C&R
conducts searches, either through its large library of patents
and trademarks, by an on-line computer, or at the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office to determine the novelty or originality of
a prospective invention or name. The firm's on-premises library
houses almost 15,000 legal and technical volumes for quick,
convenient reference.
PATENT AND TRADEMARK ACQUISITION:
If the results of the search are positive and the name is
available, or the idea is truly novel, an application and formal
drawings are prepared for presentation to the client in review.
After approval, the application is forwarded to the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office for examination. When the application is
allowed and issued as a patent or registered trademark, the
firm continues to monitor the files for maintenance and renewal
fees. C&R is also active in responding to clients' concerns
regarding infringement matters and will take steps to enforce
the rights granted under the patent or trademark against third
party infringers.
In 2005, C&R ranked 35th in the
United States in trademarks
registered for clients and is one of the top 100 firms in terms
of patents issued.
PATENTS:
From its inception, C&R has been involved in the patenting of
significant technological developments that have greatly
affected industry and our current way of life. It also takes
great pride in the fact that approximately one in every 800
patents issued by the United States today was prepared and filed
by firm. Over fifty years ago, co-founder Donald Malcolm
assisted in the patenting of the widely-used plastic base
material, polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Recently, C&R helped a major international chemical processing
company patent a method for producing low-cost polycrystalline
silicon for use in semiconductor wafers for microprocessors.
This chemical company is now the world leader in the production
of these semiconductor wafers.
A staff member of C&R played a major role in obtaining U.S.
patent protection for a young company which expanded rapidly to
become the world's largest producer of railroad track
maintenance equipment. C&R has secured patent protection for a
DNA technology, where DNA fragments embrace the cyclodextrin
glycosytransferase (CGTase) structural gene, and then are
inserted into suitable microorganisms which mass produce this
enzyme. The enzyme then can produce cyclodextrin, which is
useful as a solubilizing agent for insoluble substances.
C&R is helping to protect cellular/wireless telephone circuitry
developed by an international electronic communications company
that will enable more secure and clearer wireless transmissions
in the future.
Recent patents have been obtained by C&R on a new multi-axis
snorkel camera system for use in the film making industry that
at a close focus to an object. This new creative source of film
expression gives the appearance of flying in space around the
stationary object. C&R has filed patents for machinery capable
of recycling tires and other rubber products into re-usable
crumb rubber in the continually growing recycling field.
