Aimee Kaplan recently spoke to over ninety medical professionals on the topic "Trademarks: How To Protect Your Mark(s)." The presentation was part of a two day seminar sponsored by UPMC Mercy and Mercy Heart Institute and held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, Pennsylvania.

For over 200 years, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patents and registered trademarks, and the U.S. Copyright Office has registered copyrights all to “promote the progress of science and the useful arts.” Although new applications for patents, trademarks, and copyrights are granted every day, sometimes older intellectual property is far more intriguing. Below is a selected list of patents, trademarks and copyrights allowed in the month of March during the span of more than 100 years:
March 5 1872 George Westinghouse, Jr. patented the steam air brake
March 7, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for the telephone
March 13, 1944 Abbot and Costello's "Baseball Routine" was copyrighted
March 14, 1794 Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin
March 16, 1963 The movie "To Kill A Mockingbird" was copyrighted
March 23, 1956 The musical play "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein was copyrighted
March 30, 1956 Woody Guthrie's song "This Land Is Your Land" was copyrighted

Stewart J. Bellus and Aimee L. Kaplan both have been appointed to International Trademark Association (INTA) committees for the 2008-2010 term. Stewart will serve on the Editorial Board of the Trademark Reporter, the official scholarly publication of INTA. Aimee will serve on the Membership Services Committee which provides information and guidance to trademark practioners
